Hypermobility Syndrome (EDS)

What is Hypermobility Syndrome / Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)?

Hypermobility Syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (particularly the hypermobile type, often called HEDS) are connective tissue conditions that affect the body’s collagen—the protein responsible for strength and stability in joints, skin, and tissues. This can lead to joints that move beyond the typical range, frequent subluxations / dislocations, chronic pain, and tissue fragility. The most common form, hypermobile EDS, falls on a spectrum of hypermobility-related disorders where symptoms vary widely from person to person.

How Rise Therapy Partners Helps

At Rise Therapy Partners, we view hypermobility through a holistic, individualized physical therapy lens that prioritizes long-term function, strength, and confidence in daily movement. Our approach includes:

🎯 Comprehensive Evaluation

We begin with an in-depth assessment of joint mobility, muscle control, posture, and movement patterns to identify the root contributors to pain and instability.

💪 Targeted Strength & Stability Training

A personalized program focuses on strengthening muscles around unstable joints and improving neuromuscular control to support safer movement and reduce injury risk.

🦵 Functional Movement Retraining

We work with you to optimize how your body moves during everyday activities, sports, and rehabilitation exercises—promoting stability and coordination.

🤲 Manual Therapy & Education

Hands-on techniques combined with guided education help manage pain, improve proprioception, and support recovery. We also teach strategies for joint protection and activity modification to support your long-term wellness.

Why Physical Therapy Matters for EDS/HSD

Physical therapy is a cornerstone in managing hypermobility conditions because it:

Improves joint stability to prevent painful subluxations or dislocations.

Builds strength safely while protecting vulnerable connective tissues.

Reduces chronic pain through movement optimization and muscle balance.

Enhances proprioception and function, improving balance and confidence in movement.

Empowers you with knowledge about body mechanics and self-care strategies.

Who Can Benefit

Rise Therapy Partners’ EDS/HSD rehabilitation is ideal for people who experience:

  •  Frequent joint pain or instability
  • Low muscle endurance around hypermobile joints
  • Recurrent sprains or subluxations
  • Difficulty with balance or coordinated movement
  • Challenges performing daily tasks without discomfort

While there is currently no cure for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, evidence-based physical therapy significantly enhances quality of life and helps you engage in the activities you love with greater stability and less pain.
